Web design for Catalina businesses
More people live here than in any other suburb around this bay, and there is not one landmark in it that carries the name. Your business has to be its own anchor.
Two and a half thousand people and nothing to point at
Catalina has more residents than any other suburb around the bay. It has no hospital, no school, no police station and no fire station inside its boundary. Even the country club that carries the name is addressed to the town rather than to here.
That is an unusual position to trade from and it has a real consequence. In most places a local business gets some of its bearings for free: people locate you by the school, the shops, the pub, the oval. Here there is nothing doing that work, so every business has to establish where it is from scratch, in its own words, every time.
Which makes one ordinary sentence unusually valuable on a site at this address: where you actually are, in relation to something a stranger already knows. Five minutes from the town centre. Off the main road in. Whatever is true. It reads as filler to the person writing it and it is the sentence a customer was looking for. Website design
Your market is the whole district, not this street
A business in a suburb this size is almost never selling to the suburb. The people ringing you are spread from the north side of the bridge to the far side of the bay and inland along the highway, and a fair number of them are not in the district at all until the weekend.
So the page that wins the job answers a question about reach, not a question about location. Not "where are you", but "do you come out to me, and how soon". Very few sites in this district answer either clearly, which is why the ones that do get the call.
The ute, the sign and the site should be the same business
Trade businesses spend real money on vehicle signage and then have a website that looks like it belongs to somebody else. Same colours, same mark, same typeface, produced once in files a signwriter can actually work from, is not a vanity exercise. In a suburb with no landmarks it is doing double duty, because your vehicle is the only thing about you that anybody sees twice.
That work runs alongside the site rather than after it. Graphic design
Questions about working outside your own town.
The same five come up wherever we are on this coast, so they are answered once here rather than eighty slightly different times.
Will people in the next town along still find us?+
That depends on whether your site ever mentions them, and most do not. Search results shift with where the person is standing, so a business that only ever names its own town tends to vanish about fifteen minutes up the road. The fix is usually structural rather than a rewrite.
How do you decide which towns are worth a page and which are not?+
On whether we can write something true about that town that would not also be true of the one next to it. If we cannot, we do not build the page, because a run of near-identical pages with the name swapped is something search engines actively demote, and the damage lands on the whole site rather than the pages that caused it. Where the honest answer is one page instead of five, we say so.
We are the only business of our kind for half an hour in either direction. Does any of this matter?+
It matters differently. You are not fighting a competitor down the street, you are fighting the assumption that nobody nearby does this at all, which sends people further afield before they ever look properly. Being unmistakably present across the whole stretch is worth more to you than outranking anybody.
Our customers drive to us rather than the other way round. Does that change anything?+
Yes, and it is the thing most sites have backwards. If people travel to you, the page has to lead with where you are and how long it takes to get there. If you travel to them, it has to lead with how far you go. Very few sites answer either question at all, which is why the ones that do get the call.
What happens if we stop covering an area?+
Tell us and we take it down properly, which means the page, the internal links and the service area list all change in the same pass. Claiming somewhere you no longer go is a poor experience for the person who rings, and it eventually becomes a ranking problem as well.
Tell us what the work is, how far you travel and what you would rather not be asked to do. That shapes almost everything else. Free quote, fixed in writing.
The quote is free, fixed in writing and yours to sit on. Nobody here will ring you every Tuesday about it.
