Web design for Milton businesses

There are rules here about how big the lettering on your awning can be. There are no rules at all about your website, and almost nobody trades on the difference.

The regulatory constraint

Your shopfront is regulated. The one on a screen is not.

Milton is named by name in Shoalhaven's development control plan as an area of heritage significance, alongside Berry and Kangaroo Valley. Ulladulla is not. What that means in practice is a set of controls on your physical shopfront that businesses ten minutes away simply do not have.

Depending on the building, that can mean a limit on how many signs you may have, a cap on how much of your window glass can carry lettering, a maximum height for the letters on a verandah fascia, and a general presumption against internally illuminated or animated signage on a heritage building. Modern standardised brand signage often has to be modified before it goes up at all.

Those rules are the reason the street looks the way it does, and the reason people drive here. Nobody sensible wants them gone.

But it does mean that the single most flexible piece of shopfront you own is the one you have probably spent the least on. Nobody has to approve your homepage. Website design

The bypass

The highway is leaving, and everyone here already knows it

The Milton Ulladulla bypass has close to a billion dollars committed to it and a preferred route confirmed. The environmental impact statement is still being prepared rather than exhibited, the project is not approved, and no construction start date has been published, so nobody can tell you the year. What is not in doubt is the direction of travel.

Milton's main street has been on the Princes Highway since the town was subdivided in 1860. A share of the people who stop here today did not set out to. When the road moves, the accidental customer goes with it, and what is left is the deliberate one: somebody who chose Milton in advance, usually the night before, usually on a phone, usually from Sydney or Canberra.

That is a change in who your website is talking to, not a change in how much traffic it gets. The businesses that come out of it well will be the ones already being found and already being chosen before anybody gets in the car. That work takes a year or two to compound, which is why it is worth starting while the road is still where it is. SEO

The two Miltons

Two Miltons, and they want different things from a designer

The census shows something about this village that its tourism copy never does. Milton's residents are over-represented in professional and technical work at roughly twice the rate of the wider council area, and they are also over-represented in agriculture at more than twice the rate. A consulting class and a farming remnant, in a village of under two thousand people.

The retail and hospitality Milton is selling a discretionary decision to somebody who has options. Photography is not decoration on those sites, it is the product. So are the practical answers: opening hours that are actually current, where to park, whether you are open on a Tuesday in June.

The working Milton is selling to clients who may never come to the street at all. Consultants, practices, growers, makers, trades. Those sites need to be findable on what you do rather than where you are, and they need to survive being read by somebody assessing whether you are a real business.

We build both, and the honest answer is that they are different jobs. If you are somewhere between them, say so early. Website design

The hospital

The Milton that is not on any tourism page

Milton Ulladulla Hospital is in Milton, on the Princes Highway. Milton Public School has something close to eight hundred and thirty children in a village whose population is about eighteen hundred. The showground has been running a show since the 1860s.

We mention it because outsiders get it wrong constantly, and because it matters commercially. This is not a village that empties on a Monday. There is a hospital roster, a school run twice a day and a working catchment behind the heritage frontage, and a business here can be built on either that or the visitor trade, or on both, but not by accident.

Getting the town wrong in the first paragraph is also the fastest way for an out-of-area agency to be spotted, which is worth knowing when you are choosing one.

The rest of the brand

The signage you can put up, done properly

Since what you are allowed to display outside is constrained, the small amount you do get is worth doing well, and it has to be produced in files a signwriter can actually work from. That is the same job as the website rather than a different one: one set of colours, one set of type, one mark that survives being reproduced at four hundred millimetres and at four.

We do that alongside the site rather than afterwards. Graphic design

Working further afield

Questions about working outside your own town.

The same five come up wherever we are on this coast, so they are answered once here rather than eighty slightly different times.

Will people in the next town along still find us?

That depends on whether your site ever mentions them, and most do not. Search results shift with where the person is standing, so a business that only ever names its own town tends to vanish about fifteen minutes up the road. The fix is usually structural rather than a rewrite.

How do you decide which towns are worth a page and which are not?

On whether we can write something true about that town that would not also be true of the one next to it. If we cannot, we do not build the page, because a run of near-identical pages with the name swapped is something search engines actively demote, and the damage lands on the whole site rather than the pages that caused it. Where the honest answer is one page instead of five, we say so.

We are the only business of our kind for half an hour in either direction. Does any of this matter?

It matters differently. You are not fighting a competitor down the street, you are fighting the assumption that nobody nearby does this at all, which sends people further afield before they ever look properly. Being unmistakably present across the whole stretch is worth more to you than outranking anybody.

Our customers drive to us rather than the other way round. Does that change anything?

Yes, and it is the thing most sites have backwards. If people travel to you, the page has to lead with where you are and how long it takes to get there. If you travel to them, it has to lead with how far you go. Very few sites answer either question at all, which is why the ones that do get the call.

What happens if we stop covering an area?

Tell us and we take it down properly, which means the page, the internal links and the service area list all change in the same pass. Claiming somewhere you no longer go is a poor experience for the person who rings, and it eventually becomes a ranking problem as well.
